ART: Signe Grushovenko

These paintings are both bright AND disturbing.

I don't know if these are meant to be disturbing. But the faces are blank, everything is flat and fractured, it's like the image cannot hold and everything is flying apart. And the patterned background bits that show through remind me of those flash-silhouettes left on walls in Hiroshima. Maybe I just haven't had enough caffeine this morning?

  2. Ugh, I can't spell. Super creepster in my opinion. Like some bad Coraline movie where people don't have all the right face parts. But the the background says something very different than the faces. Less creepy more apocalypse like, I hope the puppy survives the blast!

  3. Hiya! You can see more of our work and read our artist statement and resume at www.galleryair.com/signe.htm. It's always interesting to hear what folks think of what we do...part of the intention behind the facelessness of the figures is to leave room for the viewer to bring his or her own opinions, history, and memory to the table.

  4. I really think they're beautiful -- and I enjoyed the artist statement. It's great when artists share their process, and particularly when it's an unusual and collaborative process. I love the idea of two artists working together.
